At The Wing Chun School Ilford/Peckham, we teach the students to follow a simple guideline when dealing with confrontation.
STEP 1: Use your Legs – Avoid confrontation at all times, if you are in a situation were you can walk away then DO IT! Do not put yourself in a position were you can be verbally/physically attacked. If you are successful in avoiding the confrontation apply STEP 4 immediately.
STEP 2: Use your Voice – If you are being verbally attacked, then you MUST speak out immediately and command them to ‘STOP’. Assert a firm voice, confident body language and eye contact. Use the TING SAU Drill.
If confrontation comes to an end, then apply STEP 4 immediately.
STEP 3: Use your Wing Chun – If you are physically under attack, then you MUST defend yourself by using your Wing Chun with necessary force. If confrontation comes to an end, then apply STEP 4 immediately.
Step 4: Tell someone – It’s very important that you tell someone who can help you deal with this issue. Do not suffer alone in silence.
“A problem shared is a problem halved.”
These guidelines will be explained in detail during the lesson.
Here is great example of Bruce Lee using the steps to deal with a bully in a non violent way:
